  7. The upper lid can cast a shadow and 
  8. prevent the analysis of the upper 
  9. cornea, especially with patients with 
  10. deep set eyes and/or low upper lids.  
  11. In this case, an assistant can hold the 
  12. upper lid out of the way by gently 
  13. lifting the upper lid with a 
  14. cotton-tipped applicator.  The 
  15. applicator should be placed at the 
  16. lid margin.  Do not put pressure 
  17. against the eye as this can distort 
  18. the cornea.
